Attendance and Policies
Absences
One criteria of a student’s success in school is regular and punctual attendance. Frequent absences may lead to poor academic progress and reduced social development. Regular attendance is of great importance for school interest, social adjustment, and scholastic achievement. No single factor may interfere with a student’s progress more quickly than frequent tardiness or absence.
Please call the school and let us know within 30 minutes of the beginning of the session that your child will not be in school that day. We are concerned about the safety of children and want to know that they are safe with you if they are not in school.
When do absences become a problem:
- Chronic Absence – 18 or more days
- Warning Signs – 10-17 days
- Satisfactory – 9 or fewer absences
The District truancy process includes an Attendance-Support Community panel. This panel is composed of community members who are dedicated to helping families and students overcome any obstacles to attendance and succeed in school.
If your child has been identified as having excessive absences and school-level supports have not been working, you will be contacted to schedule a meeting with the panel. During this meeting, you will have the opportunity to discuss any challenges your family faces that may be contributing to your child’s absences. The panel will work with you to identify resources and solutions that can help improve attendance, such as tutoring, counseling, or other support services. I you choose not to meet with the Attendance-Support Community panel, you will be summoned into a court proceeding.
If, after working with the panel, your child’s attendance does not improve, you will be summoned into a court proceeding. However, we believe the panel can be an effective first step in addressing attendance issues and avoiding court involvement.
We understand that life can be challenging, and we are here to support you and your child. Our goal is to help every student reach their full potential, and we believe that improving attendance is a critical step in achieving this goal.
Excuse from School
Parents occasionally ask that students be released from classes during the school day for such things as doctor appointments. Please call the office explaining the reason for the release.
If you need to change dismissal plans for your child after he/she is at school, please call the office as soon as possible so the teacher can be notified. Dismissal time for young children is rather hectic until routines are learned and if we have lots of calls right at dismissal it can be extremely difficult to get the information to the teacher in time to make the requested change.
